Synopsis
Silhouetted against a lively backdrop of war, rebellion, politics and slavery, The Devil Knows travels to the wilderness of northern Canada, Austen-mannered London, and the uncertainties of change in a surreal Jamaica. A witches’ cauldron of saints and sinners populate this fast-moving historical novel.

In September 1837, gently reared Susan and her father, the Reverend Thomas Anderson, arrive at a remote Ontario lumber camp on his pastoral circuit. Confronted with intrigue, thievery, murder, and romance, Susan is captivated by her new environment and the camp’s idealistic superintendent, John McIver. But camp rules dictate, “No guns, no whisky, no Indians, no women!” Then Susan’s ill-fated father falls victim to the hazards of backwoods life.

The quiet presence of the First Nations’ people – their legends, folklore, and wisdom – is explored in the perplexing transitional upheavals of the era.

Historically accurate, The Devil Knows offers an entertaining and mischievous escape to the world that was … once upon a time.

The Devil Knows edition by Janet HoltJohnstone Romance eBooks

Holt-Johnstone brings mid 19th Century Canadian life in the bush alive in this description narrative that is as insightful as it is brilliant. Of particular interest is the level of research evident in each of the characters introduced . . . from Susan Anderson, the principal around which the novel spins to Grey Hawk's enlightening Indian wisdoms. A delightfully charming read – tasteful yet tasty.

The Devil Knows edition by Janet HoltJohnstone Romance eBooks Reviews

Couldn't put this book down! Can't wait for the next one to appear.
Janet Holt-Johnstone is a great find.
This is the kind of book I love to read when my nose is in the book and I forget to eat and sleep. Each chapter ending compelled me to continue learning about the main characters in the story, the people, the history, the customs (English, Irish, French and First Nations people), the politics and the religious attitudes of the day. I found it fascinating that the story takes place in England, Canada and Jamaica. The author paints a brilliant canvas by giving you a convincing sense of life in the harsh back country of Canada as well as the insights of Jamaican life in 1837. M. Clancey.
A well written and researched novel on the realities and hardships of life in northern canada in the 1800's. The story was captivating and intriguing with lots of great characters and history including a love story. I loved the shorter chapters which compelled me to keep reading to see what would happen next. Kudos to the author, janet holt-johnstone. I can't believe it's her first publication!
The metaphysics and primal structures of nature seem like forgotten things in contemporary literature. The groundwork laid by Faulkner and London, Jeffers and Conrad, has been trodden over by amateur intimates, middling authors who believe all matter begins and ends in the human brain— that the land itself is simply a setting, an inanimate, teleological space made for the use of mankind alone. Janet Holt-Johnstone, however, is of another class, a member of a venerable tradition of writers in touch with the darker powers at play in the world— those of nature and history.
The Devil Knows delves deep into colonialism, the western, mercenary impulse, and the rugged foundations of civilization, intertwining the wilderness— as a character itself— and a diverse cast— which eschew the genre’s common stereotypy— into a quick paced narrative as thrilling as any adventure tale and as nuanced as anything by the Transcendentalists.
The novel resides firmly in the 19th century, capturing the flavors and colors of the time, but allows for contemporary critiques and a modern perspective on an essential pocket of history. Ms. Holt-Johnstone’s dogged research, here, is clearly evident; she draws from the corners of western memory, dredging up the forgotten and hidden forms that ripple beneath the surface of our culture.
With its otherworldly presentation of nature, haunting characters, and riveting narrative, The Devil Knows delivers a lightning bolt of much needed vivacity and depth to the current literary scene. For those willing to explore the darker side of history— and the darker side of mankind— this is the book for you.
